‘It Makes No Sense’ – Diego Simeone Urges La Liga to Postpone Games Amid Severe Flooding
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone expressed frustration over the decision to proceed with Sunday’s La Liga match against Las Palmas following severe floods in Spain.
The recent heavy rains caused flash floods in eastern Spain, leading to 211 confirmed fatalities and a continued search for missing persons. While La Liga has already postponed two matches – Villarreal vs. Rayo Vallecano and Valencia vs. Real Madrid – Simeone believes more games should be rescheduled.
In a press conference, Simeone stated, “It doesn’t make any sense. What is happening is heartbreaking. People are out on the streets with shovels and tools, helping however they can, which says so much about the spirit of this country. We want to support them however we can.”
Atletico have a strong home record against Las Palmas, with only two losses in 31 league encounters. They recently defeated UE Vic in the Copa del Rey, recovering from a 1-0 loss to Real Betis last weekend.
Las Palmas, however, head to Madrid with confidence, having won their last two league games. Despite Atletico’s injury challenges, Simeone is optimistic that players like Javi Galan, Clement Lenglet, and his son Giuliano Simeone are ready to step up.
“We have a few injuries,” Simeone added. “But these players are eager to show why they’re at Atletico, and we’re hopeful they’ll bring the focus we need to achieve our goals in the match.”
